Dynamic scanning in LED display screens: a magic show of light and shadow

2024/8/27 9:47:00

In the city where we live, LED display screens are everywhere like stars in the night sky, decorating our world with brilliant colors and dynamic pictures. But have you ever wondered how these LED display screens work? In particular, how do they display such colorful images through different scanning methods? Today, we will unveil the mystery of dynamic scanning methods in LED display screens.

一. What are the dynamic scanning methods in LED display screens

The dynamic scanning method of LED display screens is like a magic show of light and shadow, with many different "performance styles". Among them, the most common dynamic scanning methods include 1/32 scanning, 1/16 scanning, 1/8 scanning, 1/4 scanning and 1/2 scanning.

二. What do 1/8 scanning, 1/4 scanning and 1/2 scanning mean in the dynamic scanning of LED display screens?
1. 1/8 scanning

Imagine that if an LED unit board has a total of 16 rows, when the pins are driven, the 1st and 9th rows light up first, followed by the 2nd and 10th rows, and then the 3rd and 11th rows. In this way, only two rows are lit at a time, and the entire unit is 16 rows, which occupies 1/8 of the entire unit board (i.e.: 2÷16=1/8), so this method is called 1/8 scanning. It is suitable for occasions that require high definition, but the brightness may be low.

2. 1/4 scanning

Also in a 16-row unit board, if the pin is driven and 4 rows are lit at the same time, then these 4 rows occupy 1/4 of the entire unit board (i.e.: 4÷16=1/4), this method is 1/4 scanning. It is faster than 1/8 scanning, and the brightness is also improved, which is suitable for occasions that pursue speed and brightness.

3. 1/2 scanning

Also in a 16-row unit board, when the pin is driven, if 8 rows are lit at the same time, then these 8 rows occupy 1/2 of the entire unit board (i.e.: 8÷16=1/2), this method is 1/2 scanning. It is the fastest and brightest of the three dynamic scanning methods, and is suitable for occasions that require extremely high brightness and contrast.

For outdoor LED displays, due to the high brightness requirements, static scanning is the best choice because it has the highest brightness. Under the same dot pitch, the brightness of 1/2 scanning is higher than that of 1/4 scanning. However, for indoor displays, if brightness is not a concern, the smaller the scanning method, the more energy-efficient it is.
