In November 2022, Outernet London, located next to Tottenham Palace tube station in central London, England, officially opened to the public. This is a billion-pound immersive media, music and cultural district. It is Europe’s largest digital exhibition space and is equipped with the “world’s largest LED screen”.
On August 8, 2024, Outernet London collaborated with Los Angeles artist Maggie West to create three new series of works in the heart of London's West End, located in the "Now Building", "Now Trending" and "Now Arcade". The exhibition uses time-lapse photography to explore the many details of nature, and through West's color lens, it examines the time changes of everything from sand grains to the stars in the sky.The LED display screen shows the beauty of the work very well.
Terra/Surreal Digital Landscapes
In the first part of the exhibition, Terra/Earth, West explores a night in different climates on Earth. From arid deserts to the depths of dense rainforests, these surreal digital landscapes celebrate the biodiversity of our planet. The artist created the unique video environments presented in Now Architecture by photographing individual plants blooming under multi-colored lights. She then combined these shots with astrophotography of the stars and moon to create mesmerizing, moving digital collages.
The second section of the exhibition, Pools/Pools, is located in the Now Trending section. In this space, West goes from exploring vast landscapes to finding inspiration in nature’s smallest particles: grains of sand. While watching water being absorbed by sand may sound mundane, the artist’s innovative use of colored lights makes the experience more vivid, taking viewers on a mind-bending kaleidoscopic journey.
Ultraviolet/Glowing Magical Garden
In the final space of the exhibition, West illuminates the Now Arcade section with her series Ultraviolet/Ultraviolet. The work uses ultraviolet light and fluorescent ink to illuminate the complex pathways that plants take in water. To create this series, West photographed white flowers absorbing fluorescent ink under black light, then combined these shots to create a glowing magical garden. The work is the perfect finale to a colorful, surreal collaboration between West and Outernet London.
An ethereal score by Los Angeles-based composer Matt Nordstrom is combined with Maggie West’s stunning video to create a unique, dreamlike soundscape, punctuated by field recordings of bird and insect sounds. While many artists create their work using programs such as artificial intelligence and 3D animation, Maggie West’s work uses photography to capture the magical details of the world around us. All of West’s vivid color effects are created using colored lighting, not post-production. From cactus needles to grains of sand, the artist’s work for Outernet showcases the Earth in stunning detail and defines a new style of time-lapse photography.
